Asphalt paving has a temperature window. Get it wrong and you get a surface that sets improperly, wears prematurely, or fails at the joints. Here's the Bay Area seasonal breakdown.
The Ideal Temperature Range for Paving
Hot mix asphalt leaves the plant at 275–325°F. As it cools, it must be compacted before it drops below 185°F — after that point it becomes too stiff to roll properly. This means:
- Minimum ambient temperature: 50°F (and rising, not falling)
- Maximum works fine up to: 100°F+ — heat actually helps maintain workability
- Rain is a hard stop — paving cannot happen on wet surfaces or during rain
Bay Area Month-by-Month Guide
| Month | Conditions | Paving? |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Heavy rain season, temps 45–60°F | Not Recommended |
| April | Rain tapering, temps rising — 55–68°F | Good (watch rain) |
| May–June | Fog coast, warm inland — 60–80°F | Excellent |
| July–September | Dry, warm to hot — 70–95°F | Excellent |
| October | Warm, very dry — 65–80°F | Excellent |
| November | First rains, cooling fast — 55–65°F | Marginal |
| December | Full rainy season — 45–58°F | Not Recommended |
The Bay Area Microclimate Factor
The Bay Area is not one climate. Santa Rosa in July is very different from Bodega Bay or Marin headlands:
- Inland Sonoma Valley, Napa, Petaluma: Longer viable paving season, hotter summers
- Coastal (Bodega Bay, Tomales, Pt. Reyes): Marine layer keeps temps lower and humidity higher — work should be scheduled for late morning after burn-off
- Marin / San Rafael: Moderate year-round, but marine fog in summer means morning work windows close earlier
Why Peak Season Has a Silver Lining
Summer (June–September) is peak paving season, which means contractors are busiest. Plan for longer lead times — 2–6 weeks out. The upside: you can often get better scheduling by booking in late April or early May before the rush.
Pro tip: If your project is flexible, late September through October is often the sweet spot — crews are less slammed, weather is still excellent, and you catch the last dry-season window before November rains.
Emergency Paving in the Rainy Season
Sometimes paving can't wait — a major pothole, safety hazard, or failed drainage situation. Cold-mix asphalt is available as a temporary fix through winter, with proper hot-mix work done in spring. For commercial properties with safety or liability concerns, this is often the right call.
